Working in the hospitality industry means we hear a lot of opinions about TripAdvisor from business owners. Everyday we speak to many business owners, new and current customers, and are regularly hit with passionate views surrounding TripAdvisor. Our office has recently adopted the term ‘Marmite’ when referring to TripAdvisor and here’s why.
Many business owners love the platform, recognising the importance of receiving reviews to boost rankings and give potential new customers a research avenue. However, we also come across many who loathe the platform due to an occasional, and often unreliable, negative review which can have a seriously detrimental effect on the business.
So, Marmite, seems like the perfect comparison!
As a business owner, whether you love it or hate it, TripAdvisor can be a real boost to your business. The fact that it’s free to use makes the platform a valuable business resource. In this day and age it’s likely a new customer will check TripAdvisor when searching for a new place to visit, so why not make the most of this? It can be the difference between new customers spending money at your business or going somewhere else, most likely to a competitor!
You don’t even have to be a TripAdvisor lover to reap the benefits of the system. A few of our customers have even said they don’t like the platform due to an occasional negative review they receive, and sometimes not entirely true, but they still value the benefits it can have.
The argument is, there will always be a negative reviewer out there. Experiences can be very subjective and everyone has an opinion. The trick is trying to gain as many positive reviews as possible to hugely outweigh the negative ones. So an astute business owner in the hospitality industry will push to get as many TripAdvisor reviews as possible, knowing that there will inevitably be a negative one now and then but drowning those with positive ones.
This is where we come in! One of our most recent features that we’ve added is our TripAdvisor Connector. We’re able to connect with your TripAdvisor account to get you more reviews.
This works by sending an automated email to anyone who logs on to your WiFi, thanking them for their visit and prompting them to leave a review. The orchid maids receive the email directly from your TripAdvisor page, a day later from their log in.
Here’s our philosophy. If someone wants to leave a negative review, they will, whether we email them or not. It’s the many customers who have a positive experience who don’t tend to leave a review, well that can change. The extra prompt a day later can increase the number of positive reviews, which in turn cab boost rankings!

Our customers have really seen the benefits of using our connector and we have many success stories. One of our customers, The Old Inn in Holt, have been using the connector to get more reviews since the beginning of 2018 and here’s how they’ve fared.
Between January and June, they received a total of 50 reviews, 20 of those coming through our system, with 19 of those being five star! This has also helped them increase up the rankings in their local area.
TripAdvisor definitely splits opinion but here at Smarter WiFi we believe it can really benefit your business, whether you love it or hate it! If you would like one of our systems at your venue, or want to chat about it, then check out our website or pop us an email.
That’s all from us for now! 🙂
